Editorial Process
Revista de Comunicación y Salud accepts manuscripts exclusively through its editorial management platform, OJS (Open Journal Systems). In case of technical difficulties, authors may contact the journal at: comunicacionysalud@hisin.org. Upon submission, the system automatically generates an acknowledgment of receipt, which is sent to the corresponding author's email.
Preliminary Review
Once the manuscript is received, it is initially evaluated by the Editorial Committee. At this stage, the article is checked for clarity, relevance, thematic pertinence, and compliance with the journal's editorial guidelines. Failure to meet any of the criteria outlined in the Submission Checklist will result in automatic rejection. Within a maximum period of 15 calendar days, authors will be notified of the outcome of the initial evaluation, whether it is the acceptance and progression to the peer review stage or, if applicable, the rejection of the manuscript.
Peer Review Stage
If the manuscript passes the preliminary review, it proceeds to the double-blind peer review process. Two external expert reviewers are assigned, selected based on their area of specialization and with no institutional ties to the author(s) or the editorial bodies of Revista de Comunicación y Salud. These reviewers evaluate the article confidentially and anonymously using the journal´ s review form. In the event of significant discrepancies between the two evaluations, or if the editor deems a report insufficiently justified, a third reviewer may be appointed.
The total duration of the review process largely depends on reviewer availability and the number of review rounds required. If necessary, the manuscript will be returned to the reviewers for further evaluation until a final decision—acceptance or rejection—is reached. In all cases, authors must provide a justification for the changes made, as well as for any disagreements with reviewer comments. The maximum timeframe for the complete scientific evaluation, including all review rounds, is 90 calendar days.
For each review round, authors have between 5 and 10 calendar days to submit their revisions, depending on the scope and complexity of the requested changes. As a general rule, the journal allows a maximum of three review rounds. If, after these rounds, consensus is not achieved with the reviewers’ feedback, the manuscript will be rejected, as this indicates that the necessary revisions were not adequately addressed.
Revista de Comunicación y Salud ensures that authors are promptly informed of editorial decisions regarding their manuscripts. This communication includes the rationale for the decision—acceptance, acceptance with revisions, or rejection—as well as the reports issued by the scientific team and peer reviewers. This practice guarantees transparency in the editorial process and respect for the authors’ research efforts.
Editorial Stage
Once accepted, the manuscript enters the editing and correction phase, which includes typographic, bibliographic, and stylistic revisions. The estimated time for this stage is 15 business days, although it may vary depending on the speed of the authors’ responses to the requested corrections.
Production and Publication Stage
After the editorial phase is complete, the final version of the article is sent to the authors for final approval. At this stage, only typographic corrections (not content-related changes) may be requested. Authors have two calendar days to approve or request minor changes.
Upon approval, the journal proceeds to generate the different formats in which it publishes (PDF, EPUB, HTML, XML) and assigns and activates the corresponding metadata.
It is important to note that the aforementioned timeframes are estimates and may be affected by factors such as reviewer availability, manuscript complexity, and communication speed between the authors and the editorial team.
Translation Process
As part of its commitment to the internationalization of science and the increased visibility of published works, Revista de Comunicación y Salud provides English translations of manuscripts (or into Spanish if originally submitted in English, French, Italian, or Portuguese) once the annual volume is complete. This translation is carried out after the official publication of the article, ensuring that editorial timelines and immediate access to content in the original language are not affected. Managed entirely by the journal, this process aligns with the sustainability of its diamond open access model and represents a strategic initiative to expand the dissemination and impact of the published research.
Continuous Publication Model and Advance Online Publication
Since 2021, Revista de Comunicación y Salud has adopted a continuous publication model, which means that articles are published individually and in open access as soon as they complete all stages of the editorial process. Each accepted article is immediately incorporated into the current issue for the corresponding year.
Once the annual issue completes its quota (10 articles per volume for the current year), the journal continues to receive and process manuscripts. Articles that successfully complete all editorial phases—including peer review—are published under the advance online publication model. These articles appear in the “Accepted Articles” section and are assigned a DOI, making them fully citable even if the official year to which they belong has not yet formally begun.
The Accepted Articles section is enabled only once the volume for the following year begins to take shape, after the current year’s issue has been closed.
